Rubber latex balloons are made from natural rubber latex (NRL), which is collected from Hevea brasiliensis mercury rubber trees that are grown in some areas of the tropics and are completely sustainable. The rubber balloon begins to disintegrate from the moment of manufacture and contact with natural elements. When the balloon is inflated and exposed to sunlight and oxygen, decomposition occurs rapidly. Due to this process of decay, the balloon gets oxidized. Oxidation begins within about an hour of inflation and appears as a cloud or haze in some types of balloons. Just as the wood of a tree decays, a latex balloon is formed from the sap of the tree, and disintegrates in the same way. Hevea brasiliensis rubber trees are not harvested to produce NRL. NRL is obtained by tapping from mature trees, a process that does not damage the tree. It contributes significantly to the removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere that are produced by industrialized countries and is a major source of global warming.
